The Malthouse
In 2013 we embarked on a self-build project to convert a 200 year old building in Kingsbridge, originally a malthouse for the local brewery, into a family home for myself my partner and our children.
We were granted planning permission in Feb 2014 and I worked on this project on site full time for 18 months with a small team of builders, making as much as possible myself - from the roof to the door handles, the steel staircases and much of the furniture.

Location
Kingsbridge, Devon, UK
Concept
The principle challenge of the project is that the building occupied the whole of the site so carving out external space was key. The proposal peels the roof back to create a new courtyard on the first floor within the walls of the existing structure.
Flexibility to expand for the house to have the ability to expand and contract was an important design consideration. The house can function in a number of different modes: as a single house; as a house and a one bed apartment or two independent two bed units.
